Spring Graduation Spotlight: Devon Petty
Among the 2024 class of Hardin-Simmons University, English major Devon Petty stands out as a prominent member of her department and the HSU campus. After overcoming hardships with chronic illness, Devon will graduate with a bachelor’s degree on May 20. As she continues with graduate school, her goal is to become an English Language Arts and Reading teacher.
“My time at HSU, specifically my education and English classes, have greatly prepared me for my career in education,” she shared. “I have cultivated the skills needed to become an effective teacher such as how to effectively lesson plan and create positive relationships with peers and students alike.”
In addition to praising the departments and programs, Devon wanted to highlight “Donna Snook with the education department for her never-ending support and love that she has for all the students at HSU.” She went on to thank Dr. Laura Pogue, Dr. Traci Thompson, and Dr. Renee Collins for continually supporting her throughout her college career.
During her time on campus, Devon participated in several extracurricular activities and opportunities to bring her skills from the classroom to real people in the community. She was a member of the Baptist Student Ministry and the education honor society, Kappa Delta Phi. Of her time with KDP, she said, “I was able to help local underprivileged students in the Abilene area.”
When asked about advice for incoming and current students, she shared that her greatest growth on campus came from branching out and engaging with her fellow students. “When I first arrived at HSU, I was fairly shy and didn’t really know anyone but a select few people that were in my STAMPEDE group. Now I feel much more comfortable on campus since I have grown close to my peers—especially ones that I have met from working at the writing center.”
As life pushes us towards paths less traveled, Devon’s motto is,
Life can knock you down and not go the way you imagined or want, but remember that God has a plan for you. He put you here for a reason.
As we bid farewell to Devon, she goes on to serve with the spirit of HSU. Congratulations Devon!
